Shawn Conrad’s story begins as a young artist drawing his way thru William T. Sampson Elementary School> in Brooklyn New York. Shawn would go from a local Roller Hockey award-winning champion to the dance-skate pro of the Fancy Wheelers and Starlight Rollers. Shawn was now nicknamed “Magic”; the dance-skating phenom of New York.
The year 1989 was huge for Shawn! As Freshco, he released his first record “4 At A Time” as a label mate of Queen Latifah and De La Soul. The lackluster label promotion and sales performance of the record was quickly redeemed as Fresh would go on to win the World Championship Rap contest in front of industry celebrities like P. Diddy, MC Lyte, Ice-T and a capacity crowd at the Red Zone night club in New York.
When it looked like the Rap career of Freshco was dying down, Shawn found his self enrolled at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn New York. He focused on becoming a Physical Therapist this time. However, before he would complete the last few credits for his Bachelor’s degree, he received a phone call from Damon Dash (Rocca Wear / Roccafella Records). Shawn’s lyrical performance on a compilation record that featured an up & coming Jay-Z, literally blew Damon’s mind! Artistically, Shawn also decided to try his hand at making his own music for his raps by building his own sound studio at home. Shawn continued to make the Rap alias Freshco, one of Hip Hop’s greatest lyricists by going verse for verse with industry heavy weights like the late great Notorious B.I.G. in 1994.
In 1997 Shawn was given a studio suite in Soundtrack New York to do post-production audio for radio and television commercials. The satisfaction of hearing and seeing his audio engineering work on the radio and television daily, left Shawn with a great sense of career accomplishment. Health benefits and a six-figure income potential is now what motivated Shawn to continue doing post-production sound work for television (see www.earfx.com.)
While Shawn was doing sound for The Matrix and South Park commercials, he still found enough leisure time to become one of the 2001 Citywide One-Wall Handball doubles champions of New York. While he worked on shows like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon, Shawn was asked to host the Fox T.V. Saturday morning kid’s lineup for a day. He was also hired to rap the theme song for the cartoon show One Piece. In 2004, Shawn released a Gospel Hip Hop album on D’voted Records called Heaven Yeah! (iTunes.) This release was an effort to bridge the gap between young people, church and faith. Then in the fall of 2011 he returned to his Hip Hop roots and made mixtape The Adventures of Captain Flow featuring the world famous Heavy Hitter leader, DJ Enuff of Hot97 New York.
Shawn is on a mission to reach young adults by way of public speaking. His audio book From Raps To Richness has been a huge hit! With a tone of support and guidance, Shawn inspires his audience using a contagious and empowering style. Shawn is a living example of how to succeed in life, even outside of Rap! He believes people do not have to sacrifice their swagger or coolness to become successful and thriving adults.
Stay tuned for more to come from Shawn “Freshco” Conrad.
